Project Highlights
Located approximately eight miles inland from the Kivalina community, this project involved constructing a replacement K-12 school designed to serve as both an educational facility and a hub for community events. Built in a remote arctic environment, the project required strategic planning to address logistical challenges, seasonal constraints, and transportation limitations.
- Constructed a new 33,437 SF school building with modern classrooms, a commercial-grade kitchen, and a gymnasium.
- Installed a 2,369 SF mechanical building and a 1,440 SF wastewater treatment facility, including utility piping, water storage, distribution systems, and bulk fuel tanks.
- Completed approximately 40,000 SF of total development, with all structural steel buildings supported on pile foundations.
- Overcame arctic construction challenges by maintaining access roads, coordinating air and barge freight, and implementing phased construction approaches.
- Supported the community by donating food and materials and replenishing the community’s water supply through construction of a seasonal ice road.
